These are the 15 draw shots in the 2013 WPA shot program. Some you don’t need a great draw stroke, others you do, but they are all fun to try. Click on the picture to take you to the video!
Shot 1A is a basic draw shot, but you have to worry about setting the balls up correctly and drawing straight back. Shot 1B is the Rail Draw Arc shot where the draw actually produces a curve around a blocking ball. Gauging speed is important on this shot. Finally, shot 1C similarly gets the draw to take after hitting the first rail, although the curve may not be as apparent. Plus there’s a juggling component which adds to the difficulty.
Shot 2A is a straightforward draw shot. Just get the angle right. Shot 2B is a wonderful example of spin transfer, spinning the 1st object ball into the pocket after the other one banks away. Shot 2C is a touchy shot and getting the proper bank angle with enough speed on the cue ball is a difficult proposition.
Shot 3A is a cool shot where the cue ball caroms off of 2 balls before drawing back in the corner. Definitely have to get the angle right otherwise the cue ball goes all over the place. Shot 3B is a throw shot where the tangent line of the object balls will naturally take it into the rail. Using spin transfer though, the path of the object ball is altered into the side pocket. Shot 3C is the Split Slide Draw shot, where the cue ball splits the object balls, then slides over and draws back up the cue stick. It’s a slick shot, but place the cue ball closer to the cue for better results.
Shot 4A is a tough shot, controlling the draw right up the rail. I like to come from an angle, but other people will come straight up and straight back. Some players will even put a little masse on the ball to get it to hug the rail all the way up. Shot 4B is a “scratching with style” shot where the cue ball banks, curves, and beats the object ball to the side pocket. Shot 4C is a one-handed draw shot that I helped bring to the fore by using it in Ultimate Trick Shot Tour tournaments (until everyone else learned how to do it!).
Shot 5A is the Power Draw shot popularized by Mike Massey. It was originally set up as a one pocket situation shot. Mike Massey also helped popularize shot 5B, the Circular Draw shot, although “Cowboy” Jimmy Moore was great at it too. Shot 5C is another long draw shot, but spinning it off the rail helps reduce the amount of draw needed.
